Finishing 2018 Strong

Posted By Dave Smith, Thursday, December 6, 2018
Updated: Thursday, December 6, 2018

I hope that your Thanksgiving was a good one and that the holiday season this year treats you well. To say that our Fraternity has a great deal to accomplish as we enter the new year would be an understatement. From the recent appointments of our regional grand deltas, beginning the search for a new executive director, and preparing for Men of Honor, there is a great deal of information to unpack, and an even greater deal to be excited for.

As you may have heard, Grand Theta Ruybe announced the appointment of our three new regional grand deltas: Trevor Wiles (Gamma Gamma, Carthage ’14) for the Midwest, Orion Pelausa (Delta Upsilon, VCU ’11) for the South, and Chuck Beck (Alpha Epsilon, IIT ’09) for the Northeast.  As for the Western region, Grand Theta Ruybe will be acting as the interim delta until someone suitable can be selected. I want to congratulate our new deltas and look forward to working with them. The new regions have been mapped out at the end of this post.

To support our new deltas, we are opening a search for 20 assistant grand deltas, each of whom will oversee the servicing of 2-3 chapters within their designated regions. If you are interested in volunteering for any of these positions, make sure you fill out a volunteer application at

Come this January, we will host the 18th annual Men of Honor Leadership Institute. As of November, our total Men of Honor attendance (including staff, board members, participants, ambassadors, and facilitators) is 167. I cannot express how excited I am to see everyone in Asheville. To everyone who is attending, I am very excited to be able to share this life-changing experience with all of you. If you are attending, please add yourself to the Facebook group and keep an eye out for important emails from staff. In order to secure your registration and a shuttle ride to/from the airport, you must have paid your registration fee and sent staff your travel itinerary no later than December 15.

As you probably know, our executive director, Libby Anderson, has announced her resignation and will be leaving staff on December 19. Once again, I want to commend Libby for her work and dedication to Phi Kappa Sigma, and encourage that we all support her as she begins this new chapter in her career and life. With that being said, we are currently searching for a new executive director and plan to start the application and interview process early into the New Year. Until then, an interim executive director will be selected and put into place come either this January or early February. As always, we shall keep all of you informed as more details become available.

Thank you for all you do, and here’s to a Happy New Year.

Men of Honor, Executive Director Search, and Supporting New Chapters

Posted By Dave Smith, Tuesday, November 6, 2018

I hope you all had a fun and safe Halloween. If you’ve been paying attention, you already know some of the announcements I have to talk about in this month’s post. Generally, though, HQ has been busy with Men of Honor planning, chapter visits, and getting ready for this year’s giving season.

There are plenty of opportunities for undergraduates and alumni to get involved, including applying to become a Phi Kappa Sigma brand ambassador (application announcement soon), submitting content to Maltese Cross, and volunteering to support our consultants during their chapter visits. Volunteers enjoy more networking throughout the Fraternity, improved alumni support for your chapter, and greater access to staff positions and other volunteer opportunities when they arise, including Executive Board positions. To get involved, fill out a volunteer application, or email us.

As we settle into the academic year, I want to remind our chapters to continue reporting members accurately so HQ can provide the resources your new members are entitled to and need to be successful. Successful reporting now means fewer holdups when your new members are ready to initiate; on the other hand, poor reporting could affect your chapter’s insurance coverage and lead to disciplinary action. If you have any questions, please contact staff.

As many of you heard, Executive Director Libby Anderson has resigned her position, effective December 19, and will be returning to Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity as their new chief executive. I encourage all of you to support Libby as she begins the next exciting chapter of her life.

Updates, including application instructions, will be released over the coming weeks. If you have any questions about the opening, or to express interest, please email me.

Last month, we expressed our congratulations to the Phi Kaps of Oklahoma State (or should I say the Epsilon Beta Chapter?). We are proud of their early progress and look forward to seeing more of it! We hope that Epsilon Beta and all our younger chapters will take the opportunity to reach out to our active colonies at Texas Christian University and Texas State University as they begin operations and work on their petition.

Men of Honor registration closes on November 15. Don’t forget that in order to avoid a 10% surcharge on insurance, your chapter must send the requisite number of members to Men of Honor; conversely, those chapters who send at least 10% of their active roster to Men of Honor will enjoy a 10% discount on insurance.

Thank you all for your hard work, and don’t forget to vote!
